The character of The Examiner is changing – not for the good
Traditionally, suburban and rural community newspapers are spared the alternate reality commonly found in big-city dailies where printers ink is purchased by the tanker truck. Conservative values and a still-strong work ethic live on in places like Independence, Blue Springs and Grain Valley, communities where The Examiner always has been a mirror of the citizens it served.
Not any longer. Recently, changes have come to our suburban newspaper. A former open-door policy to its customers is diminished and accessibility limits to those with alternate viewpoints is notable. Most of all, the paper is departing from the traditional role of the American press that quickly demands open government for the people.
In an era of difficulty for print news media, our newspaper that has always been the primary source for redress for our three communities since 1898 will, with its new course, diminish its competitive share of the public’s news appetite.
