In response to George Michaud’s letter of March 11, “ Just what did we vote for last November?”
What we voted for and got was a leader who is addressing the numerous issues and problems this country faces. Where these problems created overnight? Will the solutions be found and fixed in fixed weeks? I think not.
The Republicans would have you believe that under their watch we were safe and secure, balanced budgets, no rules, no consequences. Recent history tells us a different story. Our past president sought more power than any other in our history. Our country’s problems, however, are not a Republican or Democratic issue, but an American issue. Some would have you think that the only “good” American is a Republican or a person who thinks just like they do.
Mr. Michaud brings up the new big boogey man word – socialism. This is used to distract, scare and mislead. If he wants to define socialism as using tax money for the benefit of the country and its citizens, so be it. If so, we have lived in a socialistic society since our conception. He needs to understand that our form of government is not capitalism or socialism. It is a democracy, which if you think about it is a socialistic ideal – government of the people, by the people and for the people, not some of the people.
As to Europe, they rely on capitalism just like we do. And guess what? Their form of government is a democracy. They just spend their tax money differently. By the way, the lifespan in Europe is longer than the in U.S. Poverty is lower, childbirth mortality is much lower, the overall quality of life is better for the vast majority of citizens. They have the same freedoms we enjoy. The European idea of using tax money to benefit more people (heath insurance) has paid off.
Face it, we have lived in a socialistic democracy for a long time to the benefit of all. Some examples: public education, universities and libraries, police and fire protection. Heck even our beloved armed forces are created and paid for in such a way. Welcome to socialism, it you chose to define it in such a way.
