To the editor:
I listened to a debate on TV about atheism vs. religion. It was very interesting because neither debater was arguing for a religion, unless you consider atheism to be one, which some people do. On the one side was a devout atheist who believes all religion poisons society, and on the other was a neutral person who believes atheism poisons society.
One thing stuck out to me among all the comments. The atheist said, in general wording, that to believe in God is putting all evidence aside foolishly and blindly following a myth.
The neutral person said in rebuttal that atheists commonly use this kind of argument, but will not apply it to their own beliefs. So true.
If you think about it, an atheist will not consider that the universe is designed at all, whether it be by a Christian God or not. In fact, the atheist in this debate referred to the Big Bang. Aren’t those who believe the universe just happened by accident putting aside evidence? Yes, they are.
They are doing what one would do to see a complete, beautifully detailed chalk drawing on a sidewalk, the likes of Norman Rockwell or Leonardo Da Vinci, and saying that because they do not see the artist, there isn’t one. The details in nature and the entire universe are the evidence of a designer, just as the sidewalk art is the evidence that someone drew it. Yet, in order to continue to believe there is no Creator, all that evidence has to be put aside. And, guess what? They have to believe that this evidence is not sufficient to prove there is an artist, therefore, they have to take it on faith. That belief takes a lot more faith then I could ever have.
