Get out of United Nations

To the editor:

The United Nations was formed in 1945 to end war and maintain peace in the world. Like its predecessor, the League of Nations, it has failed to do that. In addition, it has become a big financial burden for the United States of America.

Within a few years of the raising of the UN flag over New York City (San Francisco was the original site), wars and insurrections were raging in all corners of the globe, from the Korean Peninsula to the Indian Subcontinent to the Middle East. At one point during the 1980s, major U.S. news magazines reported that 200 conflicts were going on at one time. So much for keeping the peace; it was not done.

Eager to extort its new found role in the world, the United States immediately begin to contribute large sums of money to the UN and its agencies, starting in 1945. One UN agency alone, the (United Nations Relief and Words Agency (UNRWA) has cost the U.S. $3.4 billion since 1950. This is just the total spent on one UN agency, this does not include UNESCO and other agencies.

It is time to get the U.S. out of the UN and the UN out of the U.S. Another country should play host to headquarters (Switzerland does host some UN agency headquarters). The United States has played banker long enough to an agency whose time has passed. This money can be spent on programs and people at home, not on UN diplomats.

Unfortunately, both Democrats and Republicans have consistently supported the UN and U.S. bankrolling of it. However, it never hurts to write your representative or senator in Washington and let them know how you feel.
