To the editor:
President Obama has spoken about the facts of climate change – that the 12 hottest years have come in the last 15; that scientists agree we need to act now to curb this pattern, as evidenced by last year’s record heat, Superstorm Sandy, the most severe drought in decades, and some states’ worst wildfires.
Recently 48 environmental, civil rights, and community leaders united in historic civil disobedience demanding Obama deny the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and address the climate crisis. Many backed Senators Sanders and Boxer, who introduced a bill that would end fossil fuel subsidies, create jobs, price carbon and give rebates to U.S. residents. The fossil fuel industry has produced unhealthy water and air, leading to 40,000 deaths a year. It is time that they pay for releasing carbon.
Conservative economic advisers agree that returning revenue from a polluters carbon fee to consumers would speed the transition to clean energy without inflicting economic pain. Exxon, Shell and BP have expressed support for pricing carbon. Rallies by thousands of citizens will continue until enough leaders see the wisdom of protecting our natural life support system, and work to pass this legislation.
