To the editor:
Secondary schools starting later in the morning would allow great advantages. It would allow more students to arrive to school on time, and fewer students would feel the need to skip. Because students would get more sleep, they would be more alert in class and be able to achieve higher grades and test scores.
Some may argue that this would not provide enough time for classes, but when Blue Springs School District has late starts, the class length allows plenty of time to complete the necessary work for the day.
Another factor is depression and the health of students, this being a major problem in adolescent teens. Studies show that a major cause of depression is lack of sleep. Therefore, more sleep would reduce the risk of depression and improve student health. As a result, a later start to a school day would benefit both students and staff to create a more positive learning environment.
