To the editor:
Election fever is in the air, and the wishes of eligible voters will be ignored by the “term limit” provisions in Missouri. A qualified citizen of Missouri is forbidden to run for a seat in the state Senate if that citizen has already served two terms, and it’s four terms for the House. Doesn’t that suppress that citizen’s right to have his or her voice heard through the electoral process?
Term limits are designed to limit the influence of those groups not top heavy with donor dollars. The groups that advocate for term limits are financed by corporate political action committees, which is another way of saying millionaires and billionaires call the shots of who runs for office. The Koch brothers from Wichita, Kan., pour millions of anonymous dollars into Missouri elections to elect candidates sympathetic to their particular brand of corporate control of government. They support term limits, they have hand-picked candidates in the wings to run when their robots are term limited.
These same term-limit advocates are behind the voter suppression laws. They want to limit the senior vote. We vote to keep our Social Security and Medicare, which the term limit/voter suppression crowd led by Rep. Paul Ryan from Wisconsin wants to eliminate. They want to intimidate and stop young college age voters and are after minorities as a voters.
Term limiters and voter limiter groups are all financed by the same PACs and interest groups. Many local elected officials, as well as state elected officials, have served the area with distinction, but term limits have deprived us of their representation. The current mess and clown show in the Missouri Legislature is a product of term limits. Government for the people and by the people in Missouri will not be restored until voters have their rights restored.
