To the editor:
Throughout the health-care debate, I, along with other Republicans, repeatedly warned that this boondoggle would bury small businesses in higher taxes, new mandates and more paperwork.
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, yet Democrats targeted them to help pay for their $2 trillion-dollar scheme.
One of the Democrats’ job-killing mandates drowns small businesses in paperwork by requiring any small business owner to file two forms – one with the vendor and one to the IRS and one for every business-to-business transaction more than $600. This new burdensome mandate includes everyday purchases from shipping costs and supplies to basic Internet and phone services for daily operations. To make it even worse, this new law requires small business owners to spend time tracking down the tax ID number for each vendor requiring one of those new forms.
Since most small businesses do not have in-house finance departments, it’s Mom and Pop we are talking about. They will be spending scarce dollars to hire outside help just to comply with this new paperwork burden. That’s why I am cosponsoring the “Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act,” to repeal this foolhardy, job-killing paperwork mandate in the Democrats’ government takeover of health care.
I hope my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will join me in siding with our small businesses, rather than the IRS, and vote for this common-sense solution.
