Brenda Cox, a member of the Independence School District Alumni Association, forwards this letter that was sent to her.

I’m the person who called you about making a $56 donation to the homeless student fundraiser you were having. I’m just slow in getting it mailed off!

My kids are all grown up and supporting themselves as of this past summer, and I sold my longtime business to fund my “Give Back to America” journey that I’m calling Expedition 56. On my 56th birthday (and I was born in 1956) I left on a 56-week road trip to all 56 states and U.S. territories, spending one week in each state. I make a $56 donation every day to a worthy organization, and walk eight miles a day with my dog (eight miles a day times seven days a week is 56). I keep a blog, expedition56.com, where I keep track of where I am, who I donated to and where I walked.

Missouri was state No. 9 in my journey. I enjoyed visiting the state. I hope your fundraiser was successful! I saw a flier about it when I was walking around Independence. (I loved the town!) I don’t do a lot of shopping because I have the dog, but I’m Norwegian by heritage and I saw a Scandinavian shop, so I put the dog in the car and went to look around in there, and that’s where I saw your flier!
