Guest column: Improve veterans homes, but don’t make casinos pay

As good corporate citizens, casinos do more than a fair share for military veterans. Yet, Missouri legislators now want to increase taxes on casinos to make up for shortfalls in veterans’ homes funding, created when lawmakers tapped those funds for other purposes.

Beem: Give, serve, plant seeds

The Beem family spent a morning last month boxing food at Harvesters Community Food Network. Kate, who has volunteered nearly a decade for the organization, was determined to get us there.

Truly ‘made in America’ proves to be hard to find

Realizing that my auto was 22 years old with about 190,000 miles on the odometer and beginning to show a little wear, I decided I should be looking to purchase a new set of wheels. Being the stalwart American that I am, I elected to buy a 100 percent American made auto, which meant I would be limited to either Ford or GM products. (I don’t consider Chrysler, largely owned by Fiat, to be an American-made vehicle.)

Offutt: Be sure not to work up a sweat

I hate to exercise. It’s not that you can tell by looking at me; you’d think I’d never tried at all.

A modest proposal for our elections

To the editor:

It seems to me that the two top contenders for the White House should donate their millions and billions to the national debt...

Wilson’s acts cost millions their lives

To the editor:

You think Woodrow Wilson got a bad rap recently? (Jan. 25, “Constitution is ignored and trampled,” then Jan. 28, “Such unfair words about poor President Wilson.”) Maybe he deserved it. Consider that on his watch, we entered World War I, and he was determined to wage it, even if it meant taking over the railroads and creating a propaganda machine. He also ignored peace feelers from Germany, so intent was he to go to war. And when Austria sent a diplomatic note saying it would accept peace on any terms, Wilson ignored it.

James Everett: Student loan reform is needed

Surprisingly, I received more complimentary feedback on my recent column about crushing student debt than for any story in years. I was strongly urged to give more information, which I am now doing.

Student loans now stand at around $829 billion, making it the largest debt burden in the U.S. other than what we owe to China.
