It pains me to give this lunatic fringe some publicity but it is paramount to reinforce your beliefs in our Constitution and the First Amendment which reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress.

Fred Waldron Phelps, and his Westboro Baptist Church hate group, wrap themselves in the First Amendment every time they attend military funerals, political events, homosexual gatherings, or other religious organizations they find fault with. They carry signs that read, “God Hates Fags,” and “Thank God for Aids,” and “God Hates America” among many of their degrading epithets. Last Monday a few picketed outside the private school of first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama carrying a sign, “God is Your Enemy.”

They claimed that they would be at Fort Hood during the moving memorial services and recently appeared at a Quaker school in California protesting their beliefs.

They have appeared at military funerals throughout Jackson County and vowed to return whenever one of our heroes is honored with taps and salutes. Fortunately, the Patriot Guard Riders make sure the Phelps and his clan keep their distance.

Nothing deters this so-called tax-exempt religious group from Topeka, Kansas. Their actions have forced municipalities across the country and in England and Canada to ban, or limit their protest activities. The Baptist Church has denounced then and Evangelist Jerry Falwell once called Phelps a “loon.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center describes his church, “A tall wall connects Westboro Baptist Church to the five houses it owns on this block bordering 12th Street, and a huge upside-down American flag dominates the sky. Inside the church is a large office that serves as headquarters of a nationwide fax harassment campaign, complete with manila research folders, stacks of archives and a huge, industrial-strength facsimile machine.

The nearby sanctuary is covered with cheap carpeting, wood paneling — and about a dozen Day-Glo picket signs stacked in a corner. below a sign, “Welcome to the world of Fred Phelps, Sr.”

Despite their notoriety their numbers have not increased significantly and even one of his 13 children has abandoned him. Still, there is no shortage of targets so beware Jackson County.

I give you President John Adams; toast: Independence forever.
