Quickly – what’s the most contentious, most closely watched issue in Sugar Creek right now?
The answer is easy. It’s Lafarge’s resurrected plan to expand its limestone mining operations, despite the loud and firm opposition of nearby residents. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission got another earful about that on Thursday.
Actually, only some members of the commission heard those concerns. Four members – Jim Cooper, Mark Shilling, Glen Johnson and Matt Lehane – apparently had other obligations. Thumbs down to all four missed who the meeting.
How can this be? These meetings are scheduled well in advance, and everyone knows this is a huge issue. The commission took no action Thursday, and it plans to revisit the issue at 7 p.m. Nov. 13. Let’s hope for better attendance.
