State officials have finally worked out a deal to bring the Chiefs summer training camp back to Missouri.
The Chiefs once long ago trained at William Jewell College in nearby Liberty, but they headed for somewhat cooler Wisconsin years ago. Now they’re coming most of the way back to Kansas City.
Under the deal, Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph will get a $13.4 million athletic facility. Starting in 2010, the team will practice for three weeks a year – a nice lift for the St. Joseph economy – and the university gets to use it the other 49 weeks of the year. Not a bad deal.
This deal has had its hangups, but Gov. Jay Nixon says he hung tough to make sure the state taxpayers could get their money back if the Chiefs should happen to change their minds again and move training camp somewhere else.
Thumbs up for finally getting this deal done and for keeping a few more dollars in Missouri.
