To the editor:
Ironically, Vice President Biden’s remarks about how Republicans would put “y’all back in chains” could also be construed positively.
Since in this modern generation the only chains some folks may have had are gold chains worn as status symbols or fashion accessories, the word “chain” can mean “bling.” If “y’all” refers to those who had to pawn or sell their gold chains due to the economic downturn, and Republicans manage to somehow improve the economy so such folks can get their chains back, then that might be a positive connotation.
If, however, Mr. Biden alluded to less beneficent intent by the GOP, he could have offered more detail or proof. Like the word “change,” some words can have broad meaning, negative or positive, depending on definition.
