Do you want to meet new people or make new friends? Then volunteer.
An Internet search will bring up several million choices. Focus only on the Kansas City area and you still have 241,000 opportunities. I would start off with volunteermatch.org or volunteerkc.org. where you will find unlimited charities, organizations, companies and social groups eager to welcome you.
The obvious is always prevalent such as your local church or synagogue, the Salvation Army, Habitat For Humanity, the Red Cross, Catholic Charities, The United Way and Harvesters, to name a few.
It is always exciting to meet new people who will only be a stranger to you for the first meeting, and that might evolve into a long-term friendship.
I cite you the recent four-day visit of the traveling Vietnam Veterans memorial wall, “The Wall That Heals.” I spoke at the event and volunteered my services in writing press releases and event, tweaking the eight public ceremonies.
On May 10, I didn’t know Joe Liles, Bill Driscoll, Stan Stoner, Mike Poland, Terry Hummel, Bob Drummond, Tom Bates, Ted Miller, Mike Abbott, George Biswell, Michael Meyer, Loan Huynh, Megan Jan Minh Bui and Kat Bell. A week later, we were no longer strangers. They were just a few who helped produce the memorable four-day event from June 28 to July 1 in North Kansas City.
That initial meeting resulted in my meeting the mayor of North Kansas City and several council members along with guest speakers, performers, who volunteered their time, including Clay County Sheriff Bob Boydston. I even renewed old media acquaintances and met for the first time Susan Hiland, Cynthia Newsome, and Karen Fuller, all local TV anchors. In addition, I cannot forget the good people of Lathrop, Mo., and their intrepid rural reporter, Norma Ward.
I now have new friends and associates. All because of a meeting I attended voluntarily. Find your niche and jump in.
I give you President John Adams’ toast: Independence forever.
