Thumbs up to the city of Independence for hosting the statewide historic preservation conference this week.
The event brought a lot of people to Independence to talk about historic preservation, which is a topic near and dear to the hearts of many area residents and officials. Learning how to better preserve much of the great history here is a neverending process.
With every success story we have had here – and there have been many – there are historic parts of our community falling into further decline. If these areas can be preserved and restored it makes the city even more attractive to tourists, many of whom already visit Independence for the Truman Library and Home, and the history of the three trails and Independence’s role in the westward expansion.
Good job by Wendy Shay and her staff to bring extra focus to this area and extra attention to our community.
It is important for our area cities to be progressive and bring new amenities to town like the Events Center in Independence or the new Adams Dairy Landing Plaza in Blue Springs, but it also important for us to put equal attention in preserving our heritage in the appropriate areas as well.
Our history adds layers of character and depth to the place we call home, and gives us an another opportunity to be proud of our community.
