Independence, MO —

Maybe officials at the other end of the state are on to something.

Jefferson County is in the St. Louis area, and it is said to have one of the worst methamphetamine problems in the country – something Eastern Jackson County can relate to.

The sheriff’s department there has taken a needed step to fight the problem and renew the community. It’s posting online addresses of places where it has seized a meth lab or found discarded materials used to make meth.

Here’s the thing: The chemicals used to make meth are toxic, and a home that’s had a meth lab needs an extensive cleanup. That obviously puts a dent in a property’s value. Maybe this step will cause landlords to keep a closer eye on their properties. Mostly it will give potential homeowners information they should have before making an investment.

This could be an idea worth picking up locally.
