Independence, MO —

The fireworks season is upon us. Days before anyone could legally set them off – even in Independence, where a long-standing but toothless ban has been lifted – the near and far sounds of explosions could be heard.

Here are some simple suggestions for fun and safety.

The first is a biggie: The best approach is to leave this to the pros. Communities across Eastern Jackson County and across greater Kansas City have first-rate shows that are free, entertaining and safe. Your neighborhood show only adds a little “wow” but a lot of risk.

Nonetheless, many folks will light up a firecracker or two, so let’s offer these reminders: Find an open place outdoors to use. Have an adult or two around, and let the little kids watch – and watch only – from a safe distance. Have a bucket of water sitting nearby. (Put used sparklers in it. Those things burn hot.)

Light it and step away – well away. Don’t try to relight duds. Don’t mix and match and combine fireworks. Use them the way they’re designed. Keep alcohol out of the equation. Use everything up; don’t save some for next year because storage poses a fire hazard. Bottle rockets are dangerous and illegal.

Fireworks injure thousands every year, mostly with burns to the hands and eyes. The results can be painful and permanent. In Missouri alone, hundreds will end up in the emergency room this year. The Fourth of July is also a leading day for fires, many of them needlessly caused by fireworks. Using a  little common sense and having a couple of responsible adults keeping an eye on things is the best way to keep things safe.
