Washington, D.C. —

Traveling around and never being quite “settled,” many people ask my wife and I if we get lonely being far from home. Little do they know that we actually have two traveling companions who now follow us around the globe.

Bunny and Cash are probably among the most well-traveled pink stuffed rabbits there are. Bunny, a fuzzy animal with a prickly personality and a tendency toward rabble-rousing, came as an Easter gift to wife Emily from her Grandma Seal. Cash, a shy and nervous rabbit with long ears and a low self-esteem, joined us when Emily successfully passed the first year of her PhD. She is named after the cashmere material from which she is made.

Since then the two bunnies have traveled with us in the UK, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, France and now the U.S. Bunny is irritated that I didn’t bring her to Kosovo, but Cash was kind of scared and so I felt it was best to leave them both at home.

I interviewed them in a stylish coffee shop near their home outside Washington, D.C.

MB: Bunny and Cash, thanks for taking time out of your busy day to do this interview.

Bunny: Well, it’s about time you got us in the paper. We’ve been with you how long? And you’ve never mentioned us. I can’t wait to be getting fan mail, signing autographs on the Independence Square and have a different buck take me out to dinner every night.

Cash: Umm. ... I’m a little nervous about this. I’m not sure what to say…

MB: What do you like most about traveling?

Cash: I like art galleries, museums, learning about different cultures and finding out more about how bunnies live in different places. But I get really tongue-tied when I try to speak another language – I get really embarrassed.

Bunny: I like making fun of all the weird things people do overseas…

Cash: Bunny! That’s culturally insensitive!

Bunny: Ha ha ha. Yeah, but all those museums and art galleries that you like are boring.

MB: What have been your favorite sights so far? I get the impression that you both really liked Paris.

Bunny: Yeah! Moulin Rouge was awesome! I don’t know why you wouldn’t let me go in and see the show. You guys are so dull.

Cash: I felt really uncomfortable outside Moulin Rouge. I tried to hide behind my ears ’cause I didn’t want anyone to see me blushing. But I really enjoyed the Louvre. I wish we could have see more of the pastoral scenes. It was so interesting.

Bunny: Ugh ...

MB: We don’t have a great deal of time left, but perhaps the two of you could solve a dispute Emily and I have. Which of us is the better packer?

Bunny: Well, Emily takes forever to pack – practically weeks. Which means we get stuck in the bottom of the bag for ages, unable to breathe. And I have to listen to Cash’s inane babbling for days on end. Not that you’re a good packer – you just throw everything in any old way and I get smashed between your laptop and a pair of smelly socks.

Cash: Umm ... I think you are both good packers, I just appreciate having a chance to see the world with you guys…

Bunny: (Cough) Kiss up ...

MB: OK, well that’s all we have time for today. Thanks to both of you.
