OCT. 17: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Lee’s Summit Police Department. Students must be age 11 or older; participants ages 16 and younger must bring proof of age. Shane Luallen is the instructor. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
OCT. 17: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Lone Jack Primary Education Building in Lone Jack. Students must be age 11 or older. Students under 16 must bring proof of age. Frank Powers is the instructor. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
OCT. 18: Deer Stalking – 1-2 p.m. for families with children ages 6 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Join a naturalist for a fall hike to discuss and learn about the whitetail deer. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
OCT. 22: Wild Ones: Soup and Fable – 6-8 p.m. for adults ages 18 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Savor a native wild autumn harvest, then share a warm and wild native tea and listen to fables around the flames of the campfire. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.

OCT. 24: Eye Spy Nature Hike – 1-2 p.m. for families with children ages 5 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. A nature hike designed for those interested in broadening their natural horizons. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
OCT. 25: Hunting the Ghost Plant – 2-3:30 p.m. for families with children ages 5 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. A hike to see the last falling leaves of summer give way to the crisp air of autumn. Go in search of the ghostly “Indian Pipe” plant, whose pale colorless appearance is unmistakably haunting. Learn how this mysterious plant survives without chlorophyll. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
OCT. 29: Dutch-Oven Cooking – 5:30-7:30 p.m. for adults ages 18 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Learn how to select, season, clean, prepare food, regulate temperature and properly clean a Dutch oven. A recipe or two will be available as well while preparing an entire Dutch oven meal. OCT. 31: Things That Go Bump in the Night – 12:30-1:30 p.m. for families with children ages 5 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Take a peek at wild animals that like to venture into our neighborhoods at night. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
NOV. 1: Burr Oak Woods Hours Change – With the end of Daylight Savings Time, the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area will be available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The electronic gate will close automatically. If you have any questions please call the Nature Center at 816-228-3766.
NOV. 1: The Not-So-Spooky Tales of Burr Oak Woods – 6-7:30 p.m. for families with children ages 8 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Listen to some stories about bats, owls and other little critters that roam the night. Take a night hike in search of the animals not typically seen in the daytime. NOV. 2-4: Burr Oak Woods Managed Archery Hunt – Annually Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area plans a three-day managed archery hunt for deer for preselected hunters. During this time the area, trails and roadways are closed. The Nature Center will be open normal hours of operation. If you have any questions please call the Nature Center at 816-228-3766.
NOV. 2, 3 & 4: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 6-9:30 p.m. each day at Raytown High School. Students must be age 11 or older and must attend all three sessions in order to qualify. Pre-register by calling 816-268-7027.
NOV. 7: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. Jake Jacoby is the instructor. Students must be age 11 or older. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
NOV. 7: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Oak Grove Community Center. Mike Mansell is the instructor. Students must be age 11 or older. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
NOV. 7: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Metropolitan Community College-Longview in Lee’s Summit. There is a $5 building use fee per student. NOV. 7: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Parma Woods Shooting Range in Parkville. Students must be age 11 or older. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
NOV. 9: Bird Watchers – 8:30-10 a.m. for all ages at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Join Missouri Master Naturalist Sara Scheil for Burr Oak Woods’ monthly bird hike. All levels of birders are welcome. The group will meet at the Nature Center and hike a favorite route to identify local birds both visually and by song. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
NOV. 9: Prune Like a Pro – 6:30-8 p.m. for adults ages 18 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Most trees fail in storms due to pre-existing defects that could have been corrected with proper pruning practices. Urban Forester Chuck Conner will teach you how to train newly planted trees as well as proper pruning of mature trees in your landscape. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
NOV. 10: Wild Ones: Perfectly Persimmon – 1-3 p.m. for adults ages 18 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Persimmon fruit is a wild edible that can be enjoyed in so many different ways. Join the Wild Ones as we learn to identify, harvest and to discover ways to prepare this fruit. NOV. 10, 11 & 12: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 6-9:30 p.m. each day at Fort Osage Vo-Tech Center in Independence. Al Diman is the instructor. Students must be age 11 or older and must attend all three sessions in order to qualify. Students under 16 must bring proof of age. Pre-register by calling 816-325-7370.
NOV. 14: Girl Scout Badge Day – 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for Junior Girl Scouts at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center now has a fun patch you can earn that is loaded with activities that also fulfills badge requirements for eight other Junior badges. A total of six activities completed will earn the Burr Oak Woods Fun Badge. Each activity is about an hour in length. Troops or individuals may attend all day or just one activity.
