Blue Springs, MO —

1 Tell us about the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. What’s its purpose?

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an overnight experience you'll never forget. It brings communities together to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and raise money to support the ACS mission.

2 How was your group formed?

Our team, GIRLFRIENDS, was formed five years ago when I lost my dad to kidney cancer. A very good friend of mine, Tammy Miller asked me to walk with her at this event. Within the last five years, she lost her Mom to lung cancer and I have also lost my Mom to kidney cancer. Our passion for this event is very personal.

3 Are you planning an events in the future?

We are doing a fundraiser on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Sonic in Blue Springs. All tips will go to our team for the relay.

4 How can someone get involved in Relay for Life?

If you are interested in participating in the relay, go to Cancer.org and search for Relay for Life and find an event in your area. Our Relay this year is at Fort Osage High School on June 13, we’ll walk for 12 hours, raising funds for cancer research.

5 Besides Relay for Life, what else can people do to help with the cancer cure effort?

People need to get involved in something, whether it is a Relay, another fundraiser, volunteering somewhere to help raise funds for cancer. I never thought I would know so much about this disease until it affected my family so personally. The possibilities to help others are endless.
