1 What favorite contributions have you made during your term as Jackson County Sheriff?

Throughout the years, I have tried to bring more modern technology to the Sheriff’s Office. This technology has come in so many ways, all of which has been brought by use of limited funds and grants. Examples of this technology include lap top computers, which the deputies utilize in the field to write police reports and significantly increase the amount of time spent in the field where they may be a visible deterrent for crime. In addition to lap tops, the Sheriff’s Office now has in car video cameras and a Live Scan (part of the Automated Fingerprint Information System). These are ways to document criminal activity and those that commit those crimes when processing their arrest. Over the years, we have also improved the tactical equipment for our Emergency Response Tactical Team, which increases safety for each deputy as he/she protects others in an emergency situation. Finally, our job is to protect the citizens and guests of Jackson County. With the implementation of the Jackson County Traffic Safety Task Force (JCTSTF), we have been able to start combating the problem of impaired drivers in Jackson County.

2 Even though you have chosen not to run again for sheriff, what goals would you like to see your successor pursue for the good of both the department and the county?

I think my successor should pursue competitive pay and a better retirement. To better recruit and retain, the pay must improve. Otherwise, we will not get top people or retain those we have. Police work is stressful and more complex than most jobs. Police need to retire with a wage they can live on.

3 What do you think is the biggest need of the sheriff’s department?

The Sheriff’s Office needs a new facility. Everything is outdated and in need of constant repair. Therefore, this facility should include all the necessary amenities as well as a new radio system. Unfortunately, we spend way too much for facility maintenance.

4 What measures are in place to strengthen ethics in the sheriff’s department? \

Bringing in quality people is a key to strengthening an ethical department. Making sure everyone understands that unethical behavior will not be tolerated, both on and off duty. Training and more training with well written and enforced policies is the key.

5 After you leave office, what are your plans, both professionally and personally?  I am looking at a couple of offers I have in the private sector as a security director. Hopefully, my wife and I can take some vacations we have always wanted, because most of my time away from work has been at a law enforcement conference of some sort.
