A summer Drive
Down Country Roads
Lennie Wyre
Delicate queen Ann’s lace
Snowy tops bending, swinging in the breeze
A purple thistle in a distant field
Daylilies – orange and yellow
planted long ago
giving pleasure still tp passers by
A rambling rose
blooming on a broken fence
hoping to be admired
Pleasant sight to enjoy
In summer. On a drive
Down country roads
Ocean

Calmness captures the view, as far as the eye can see.
Sea birds, with their young, stand facing the water.
Awaiting the bounty of their next meal to be washed ashore.
A cool breeze flows toward the beach,
Flirting with the rocks and sand.
It subsides, the returns, more cool, more forceful,
Blowing tiny whirlwinds of sand away from the water’s edge.
A distant turn becomes clearer,--closer, -- louder
As it becomes a steady soft roar.
This roar grows fiercer and louder
Water rising and writhing, heaving and wretching
Compelling and hypnotizing, it howls
Like a winters’ blizzard wind.
Forceful and frightening, the waves advance
Growing louder, stronger and more threatening
With the awesome swell of ever white cap.
Angrily spewing dirty foam over a million miles
Of shore, it throws itself against
Jagged rocks and unto smooth sands.
It forces its way into caves and dark crevices
Speckling the beach with rocks, shells and
Unidentifiable bits of dead things in tangled
Webs of sea weed.
The roar subsides
The sea retreats, dragging back into itself.
Taking with it, rock and shells
Unidentifiable bits of dead things in tangled webs of sea weed.
Calmness slides into view as far as the eye can see.
The smooth, clean sand of the beach reflects serenity and peace.
Tiny waves sigh, softly slapping against the sand.
Marking thin lines along the shore.
