Sabrina Henderson, of Kansas City, enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard.
“I knew that I wanted a better life from my Family, so I decided to join,” Henderson said. “I really don’t mind the running, so I think I’ll do fine at basic training.”
Henderson will attend Army basic training in November at Fort Jackson, S.C. She will then attend advanced individual training at Fort Gordon, Ga., as a signal support systems specialist.
Henderson enlisted under the Active First Program and will serve in the active duty Army for four years before returning to the Missouri National Guard for her last fours years. Combining her bonus from the active Army and the National Guard, Henderson will earn a total of $60,000.
While waiting to ship to basic training, Henderson will attend drill one weekend a month as a member of the Missouri National Guard’s Recruit Sustainment Program. This training will help prepare Henderson for her Army training.
“Henderson followed orders and learned a lot of basic Soldier skills at her first drill,” said National Guard recruiter Sgt. Amy Newman, of Independence. Newman said that the skills Henderson is learning will benefit her at basic training and help her fall into a leadership role.
Newman said Henderson will make a great addition to the Army.
“Henderson is very dependable and trustworthy,” Newman said. “She is responsible, hard working and will make a great leader.”
Henderson is supported by her husband, James, and daughter, Breanna, 2.
