Independence, Missouri is a very historic place in history.
Anyone that knows me is chuckling as they read this article as history has not been a vast element of knowledge for me and yet history has played a very big role in my life. Independence is located in west central Missouri just minutes from downtown Kansas City and four hours west of St Louis. Again, folks understand if you tell me go west I probably would go the wrong direction, however, I am trusting maps on the correct directions for this article.
I realize most of you live in Independence or near Independence and think what is she talking about, however; I don’t want you to miss visiting Independence if you haven’t already done so.
My family has lived all over the country and in many cases we missed visiting locations right in front of us, so don’t miss out on the history and fun time if you haven’t visited Independence. Independence is where three trails began, two Civil War battles were fought and one President began his march to the Presidency. Along with this visit you can see the historic Independence Square, you can have a covered wagon tour, visit specialty shops, antique shops, historic sites and dine at many good restaurants.
We all talk about the good old days, but they are right here in front of us if we take advantage of what our city has to offer. A good time to visit Independence would be August 29 through September 1, when we celebrate Santa Cali-gon Days. During these few days many special events take place in downtown Independence. While you are visiting during the Santa Cali-gon days please drop by the American Legion booth, we would love to talk to you. The American Legion also has a lot of history and we have four active groups at the post, we have the Legion (military men and women), Women’s Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion (Sons of veterans whether its father, grandfather) and the Legion Riders (already a member at the legion, Auxiliary or Sons of the Legion).
All of these groups work together at Post 21 for our military and each will be represented at the booth during Santa Cali-gon days. Please drop by for a visit, see if you are eligible for membership. Post 21 is nearby, and for a little more history, come visit the post that Harry S. Truman belonged to.
While you are there you can have a cool one in the lounge, watch TV on the big screen, play pool, or just visit with the members. At Post 21 you can also participate in bingo on Monday and Tuesday evening, attend the Saturday night dances, we also offer a taco night, Saturday morning breakfast, or the Friday Steak night and many other events. Stop by our booth and talk to us, we would love to have you join our group. Enjoy what Independence has to offer.
