Special to The Examiner
Independence, MO —
Edith Long receives a flag from David Speaks (front row - holding a flag) with (2nd row, L to R) Bob Speaks, Brad Speaks and Larry Cappetto. This photo was taken at the Truman Library in replica of President Truman’s White House office. Edith is the sister of Sgt. Charles Long, the only Congressional Medal of Honor winner from Independence. Charles was killed in the Korean War. The flag, which flew over the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, was presented to Edith by David during the 3rd annual ‘Lest they be forgotten’ Veterans Program, which was sponsored by Speaks Chapels in Independence. The program was held on June 25, the 58th Anniversary of the start of the Korean War. David served as chairman of the event.
