Horse show benefit at Lone Star Ranch
The Pony Express Horse Show Circuit will be hosting a horse show Saturday at Lone Star Ranch in Kansas City, a benefit for the Health Ministries Association of the Community of Christ church. Start time for the show is 9:30 a.m.
Lone Star Ranch, owned and operated by morning Fox 4 TV anchor Mark Alford, is at 9920 E. 137th St., south of Longview Lake. From Interstate 470, take the Raytown Road exit and travel south on Raytown Road to Highgrove Road, turn left on Highgrove, then turn right on old Raytown Road. Turn left on 137th and Lone Star Ranch is on the left.
Health Ministries Association (HMA) of Community of Christ is a Good Samaritan health professional organization.

The entry fee for most classes is $10, the entry fee for “stick horse” and “open schooling” classes is $1. Stalls are available for $40, call 816-739-4097 to reserve a stall. Most classes are open to all breeds.
Registration papers are needed for classes restricted to Foxtrotters, Arabians and half Arabians, or Quarter Horses. Negative Coggins test papers are required for all horses entered in the show.

Mount Washington Baptist Church will be holding an indoor garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 9623 E. Independence Ave., Independence.
Naylor to speak at Stone Church Sunday
Jeff Naylor will speak on the theme of “Have a Just Heart” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service on Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ.
Naylor serves as a counselor in the Central Mission Center Bishopric and he is president of the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation.
He is also vice president for distribution services and regulatory reporting with Sungard, an international software company for financial institutions. Phillip Caswell will be presiding while John Davies, Misti Mengel, Greg Mengel, Jeff Rogers and Cindi Rogers will provide the ministry of music.
Others participating will be Judith Jones, Greg Savage and Linda Keller.
David Brock, presiding Evangelist for the Community of Christ, will be the Summer Series speaker at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at the Stone Church. The theme for this evening’s worship is, “We are Community Builders.”
Brock has been a minister with Community of Christ since 1978 and his assignments have included the Pacific Field, various areas of western USA, the African Field as well as a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles.
A full-time minister since 1978, he was ordained as a president of seventy at the 1988 World Conference and as an apostle at the 1992 World Conference.
Ray McClaran will be presiding while Pam Robison, Pat Henshaw, and the College Park Choir will provide ministry of music. The “Voice of the Past” will be Roy Cheville. The congregation that will be honored is West College, now College Park, which was established in 1949.

Free concert at First Baptist Bible Church
Austin Cook will present a free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at the First Bible Baptist Church, 1441 S.E. Adams Dairy Parkway, Blue Springs.
Cook, a senior piano performance major at Bob Jones University, began his study of the piano at the age of 4. In the summer of 2007, he traveled on a musical mission team in Europe accompanying on the piano.
The team spent more than two months traveling to more than seven countries throughout Europe. After he graduates in December, Austin hopes to pursue a master’s degree in collaborative piano in New York City.
Timothy Lutheran sponsoring retreat
Why should I pray, is the theme for the Sept. 5 through 7 women’s retreat sponsored by Timothy Lutheran Church. The weekend retreat will be held at Lake Doniphan Conference & Retreat Center, near Excelsior Springs.
The featured speaker is Christy Burns, a member of Timothy, where she partners with husband, Kent, Minister of Music, and also teaches music at Timothy Lutheran School.
A gifted retreat presenter, Christy has given two concert presentations, during which she shared her personal spiritual journey as a result of Kent’s life-threatening battle with pancreatitis.

Disciples congregation offers Tuesday events
Disciples Community of Christ is an alternative congregation that practices radical hospitality will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Walnut Gardens congregation, 19201 R.D. Mize Road.
The topic will be on insight, the exploration of accepting all sexual identities with a panel discussion monitored by Sam and Pat Marmoy. Peaceworks will partner with Walnut Gardens Chuckwagon at Santa-Cali-Gon over Labor Day weekend.

Ice cream social at Sugar Creek UMC
Sugar Creek United Methodist Church will be holding an ice cream social from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 415 N. Sterling Ave.
There will be homemade vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, with cake, coffee and iced tea.
The cost per serving is $4.
Stone Church offering many family activities
In response to a neighborhood survey conducted by members of the Community of Christ Stone Church earlier this summer, the following activities have been planned from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 23.
For children ages 5 through 12, there is the Gospel Wagon, an interactive program to teach love, cooperation and worth. Also, the fire department will bring in a fire truck, and the police have been invited to bring a canine unit and a D.A.R.E. squad car.
The personal interest classes for adults as indicated on the survey will be: Controlling and eliminating debt (dealing with payday loans); parenting the child and adolescent; money management for now and the future; and tips on getting a job.
A light lunch will be served at noon for all those who have registered. There will also be a drawing for AMC movie tickets and other discounts.

Dessert/discussion at St. Anne’s Episcopal
A dessert and discussion with the Rev. Alex Awad will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. August 25 at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 1815 N.E. Independence in Lee’s Summit. This event is co-sponsored by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Awad, a United Methodist minister, is currently serving as the pastor of the East Jerusalem Baptist Church and teaching at Bethlehem Bible College in the Holy Land. He is the author of two books about Palestine, his most recent is “Palestinian Memories.”

CROP walkers to hold inspirational rally
CROP walkers from Eastern Jackson County can save some gas and join in an inspirational rally at 5 p.m. Aug. 24 at the First Christian Church, 125 S. Pleasant St. in Independence.
This year you can pick up your CROP walk pledge packets closer to home and you can choose to join in a brief service with prayer, special music, and testimony about how your walk benefits a local charity, Community Services League, as well as the hungry all around the world.
CROP stands for “Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty” and is organized by Church World Service.
This is the 40th anniversary of the Walk in the Kansas City area, with more than 2,000 people participating last year.
The rally is sponsored by the Independence Ministerial Alli-ance and everyone is welcome.
