Rummage/bake sale
at First Church of God
The Sisterhood of Christ, the ladies group of the First Church of God, will hold a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, 220 E. Elm, behind D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Noland Road Chapel in Independence.
A variety of items will be for sale, including homemade baked items, cold drinks, and the Sisterhood’s new cookbook, with more than 400 recipes. Starting at 1 p.m., it will be everything you can get into a bag for $1.
Proceeds will help the Sisterhood of Christ continue its fellowship with other siste’s in Christ, and to help with community projects.

Country Meadows
sets gospel concert
Gold City, a Southern gospel group, will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at Country Meadows Baptist Church, 4901 Lee’s Summit Road, Kansas City.
Gold City has had several No. 1 radio songs, including “Midnight Cry,” “It’s Still the Cross” and “He Said.”
The concert is free, but a love offering will be taken. All buses and vans are asked to drop off passengers at the door, from there they will be directed to a designated parking area. Seating is limited.

‘Take Heart, Have Faith’ at Stone Church
Terry Snapp will speak on the theme of “Take Heart, Have Faith” at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ. Snapp is the associate pastor of the Stone Church and is a consultant on fundraising with businesses and organizations.
Bob Wilson will be presiding with Barbara Tankard Thatcher, Paulette V. Resch and Karen Cross will be providing the ministry of music. Others participating in the service will be Linda Keller, Eric Scott and Jeanne Chase.
Stassi Cramm, a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles for the Community of Christ, will be the speaker at the Summer Series starting at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at the Stone Church. In addition to the Central Mission Center in the Independence area, she is in charge of the Michigan USA Mission Field, African-American, Campus, and Young Adult ministries. Prior to her apostolic assignment, she served as a counselor to the Presiding Bishop. Stassi has served the church in various congregation and district offices during her time as a lay minister including worship commissioner, youth choir director, Sunday school teacher, co-pastor, as well as congregation and district stewardship commissioner.
Doug White will be presiding while Twila Rider, Lucinda Kincaid, Paulette V. Resch and Kathy Bennett will provide the ministry of music. The Voice of the Past will feature Arthur Oakman. Others participants will be Mark Byrne, Tom Bennett and Cheryl Coffman. The congregation that is being celebrated is South Crysler Congregation, established in 1945.

Franssens returns to First United Methodist
Sunday will mark the homecoming for the Rev. Shawn Franssens at the First United Methodist Church of Independence, 400 W. Maple Ave.
Rev. Franssens will deliver the sermon as a guest speaker at the 10:15 a.m. worship service at the church, where he began his active Christian journey 21 years ago. His sermon title is “Acts 29.”
Now a resident of Bella Vista, Ark., and charged with creating a new United Methodist church in Jane, Mo., he was 15 when he accepted an invitation to attend a youth group meeting at the Independence First UMC. There he began to develop an interest in the Christian lifestyle and also became acquainted with another teenager, who was to become his wife. Married in 1996, he and Catherine Carmichael Franssens have two children.
A graduate of Fort Osage High School and a holder of a business degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Franssens worked as an advertising copywriter for several years. He said he began thinking about a career in the ministry about 10 years ago, soon after he and Catherine began volunteering with the youth group at First UMC.
They eventually became youth ministers at the church, and he took on additional duties in evangelism, enrolled at the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, and was graduated and ordained by the United Methodist Church in 2006.
He was appointed pastor of St. Mark’s UMC, 603 N. Jennings Road, and served three years before receiving the new appointment July 1 to southwest Missouri.
The Rev. Alan D. Pruitt is senior pastor at First UMC, and the Rev. Donice Heriford is associate pastor.

Flute orchestra sets
first U.S. performance
The International Flute Orchestra will present its first United States public performance at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Community of Christ Auditorium, 1001 W. Walnut St., Independence.
It will share music from around the world, from classical operas, dances, and folk songs to original works written especially for this orchestra. The group is an association of approximately 40 college teachers and/or orchestral musicians from across the United States and Canada. It has performed across Europe, and its aim is to improve relations between countries.

Angel Food Ministries
at St. Matthew UMC
St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 2415 R.D. Mize Road, was damaged by the tornado that ripped through Independence, with the church receiving a lot of damage. The church is trying to get everything back as it was.
The one important sign board was destroyed, but to all Angel Food Ministries people, you will be able to order from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Disciples congregation
offers Tuesday events
Disciples Community of Christ is an alternative congregation that practices radical hospitality and meets Tuesday evenings at the Walnut Gardens congregation, 19201 R.D. Mize Road. The August schedule is:

  • Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m., table – catered dinner and fellowship. The cost is $5 to $7 each.
  • Aug. 19 at 7 p.m., insight – exploration of accepting all sexual identities with a panel discussion monitored by Sam and Pat Marmoy.

Peaceworks – This activity changes monthly, as the church supports Harvesters, Micah Ministries, Outreach International and others. This month the church will partner with Walnut Gardens Chuckwagon at Santa-Cali-Gon over Labor Day weekend.

Contemporary artist
offering workshop
Jason Burton, a contemporary Christian music recording artist, will present a worship concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church, 1416 Main St., Grandview. His music has a pop feel with hints of folk music.
Formerly of the duo, “Belief,” Jason has just released his second solo album, “Breaking Through.” He has been in full-time music ministry for nine years. He and his wife, Kristi, live in Petersburg, Va.

Free concert at First Baptist Bible Church
Austin Cook will present a free concert at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 a the First Bible Baptist Church, 1441 S.E. Adams Dairy Parkway, Blue Springs.
Cook, a senior piano performance major at Bob Jones University, began his study of the piano at the age of 4. In the summer of 2007, he traveled on a musical mission team in Europe accompanying on the piano.
The team spent more than two months traveling to more than seven countries throughout Europe. After he graduates in December, Austin hopes to pursue a master’s degree in collaborative piano in New York City.

Garage sale at Mount Washington Baptist
Mount Washington Baptist Church will be holding an indoor garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16 at the church, 9623 E. Independence Ave., Independence.

Summit Grove to offer financial seminars
Summit Grove Community of Christ will be offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University beginning Sept. 2. A free preview will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, at the church, 411 S. Lee’s Summit Road.
The church will also be holding a community breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Enjoy biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, oatmeal, juice and coffee. The cost is $5 for adults, and $2.50 for children under 4.
