The Blue Springs and Blue Springs South cross country squads made impressive showings at the prestigious Greg Wilson Classic Saturday.
While the Blue Springs South girls claimed the top two individual spots in the varsity girls race, Blue Springs captured the team title over the 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) course at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.
Tori Findley and Danielle Hotalling finished 1-2, with Findley topping her Blue Springs South teammate by almost a minute with her winning time of 18 minutes, 16.4 seconds. Hotalling finished in 19:10.6.
Tessa Valdivia, though, led Blue Springs’ more balanced attack with a third-place finish in 19:18.4 as the Wildcats totaled 52 points to top Mill Valley (Kan.) (80) and Blue Springs South (81).
Blue Springs’ top five all finished in the top 21 individually. Senior Elaine Hubner claimed fifth in 19:40.1, followed by freshman Annemarie Rehbein (ninth, 19:55.6), sophomore Kyleigh Ingalls (18th, 20:21.6) and junior Reese Howard (21st, 20:25.50).
Blue Springs South freshman Jayme Opdahl finished 14th (20:15.1) and senior Emma Bassford was 25th (20:35.7) for the Jaguars.
In the varsity boys race, Blue Springs captured the top two places individually and took third place as a team.
Blue Springs totaled 93 points to finish behind host St. Thomas Aquinas (56) and Rockhurst (65).
Seniors Victor Mugeche and Oaklee Hauschild led the way for the Wildcats, finishing 1-2. Mugeche topped Hauschild by nearly 40 seconds with a top time of 15:11.4. Hauschild finished in 15:51.3 over the 5K course.
Senior Morgan Cauveren was 23rd (16:48.3), Gabe McClain was 29th (16:59.0) and Jonah Loewe finished 38th (17:11.9) to complete the Wildcats’ scoring.
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH SOLSBERG INVITATIONAL: The Blue Springs South boys had the top area finish in the Solsberg Invitational Saturday at Lake Jacomo.
Zachary Grover of South claimed fourth place over the 5K course in 17:11.8. Dillon Grover claimed 10th place (17:29.1).
Lee’s Summit North brothers Matt Reis (17:26.6) and Drew Reis 17:27.2) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
North’s Jack Gatti (19th, 18:11.7) and Cole Dunton (20th, 18:12.1) and South’s Nathaniel Henks (23rd, 18:18.1) also claimed top-25 finishes.
Nathan Lewis took 37th (19:12.3) and Marcus Thimeche was 38th (19:15.2) to pace Truman.
In the girls race, Lee’s Summit North put its top five in the top 13. Madelyn Robinson finished as the runner-up (20.25.1) behind individual winner Emma Roth of Park Hill South (20:05.7). Annie McCord (fifth, 21:13.4), Sam Simpson (sixth, 21:44.3), Katie Wehrwein (seventh, 21:52.3) and Sydney Allen (13th, 22:29.2) completed the scoring for the Broncos.
Stacy Briggs finished fourth (20:57.6) and Katie Ameku was 17th (23:15.0) to lead Truman.
BROOKS MEMPHIS TWILIGHT CLASSIC: The Grain Valley girls captured fourth place out of 21 teams and the boys captured eighth place out of 24 teams in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.
The Grain Valley girls totaled 186 points in their division. West Plains won at 71.
Mariah Lister captured fifth place overall with a time of 19:17.49 over the 5K course. Kayla Wade was 35th (20:25.90) and Valerie Holcomb was 36th (20:26.12) to help pace the Eagles.
The Grain Valley boys totaled 247 points. Parkway West of suburban St. Louis won with 40.
Sophomore Royce Fisher claimed 34th overall in 16:52.95 to lead the Eagles.
LIBERTY INVITATIONAL: The Fort Osage and William Chrisman boys and girls each finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 2.1-mile Liberty Invitational Saturday at Stocksdale Park.
The Fort Osage boys totaled 178 and Chrisman had 230. Liberty won the title with 50.
Benjamin Preston was 39th (12:58.2) and Austyn Smith was 40th (13:02.0) to lead Fort Osage. Trey Dumas finished 37th (12:55.2) to pace Chrisman.
In the girls race, Fort Osage had 152 points and Chrisman had 225. Liberty North won with 40.
Hailey Alvis paced Fort Osage with a second-place showing in 13:46.2, finishing behind only Liberty’s Madelynn Hill (13:16.40). Fort’s Brooklyne Sederwall took 27th (15:27.8).
Lilly Conner-Urnise paced Chrisman with a 32nd-place finish (15:50.4).
ST. MICHAEL INVITATIONAL: Oak Grove senior Jacob Sandy claimed third place in 18:50 over the 5K course to lead the Panthers to a 13th-place finish in the St. Michael Invitational Saturday.
Oak Grove totaled 274 points. Cameron won at 99, and host St. Michael was seventh at 191.
Zhenya Johnson took eighth in 19:11.87 to pace St. Michael.
St. Michael took third (72) and Oak Grove was ninth (224) in the girls varsity race. Bishop Miege won at 49.
Caroline Meyers was second (20:54) and Grace Wheeler was eighth (21:33) to pace St. Michael. Georgia Klink (48th, 27:01.05) and Mikayla Maples (49th, 27:01.81) led Oak Grove.
