The public is invited to check out the first Joey Butler Classic Saturday at the Young Park.
The slow-pitch softball tournament – which features 13 teams made up mostly of athletes who played at Blue Springs and Blue Springs South high schools – will help the Blue Springs Educational Foundation-The Joey Butler Leadership Foundation, which helps Blue Springs School District student-athletes and coaches. The tournament was originally scheduled for Aug. 5 but was postponed by weather.
It will be a family event with a baseball-themed craft market, non-profit concessions and a children-run lemonade/sweet tea stand. All proceeds go toward the foundation.
“It will to help develop leaders within the school district's athletes and coaches, the way Joey did dating back to the early 2000s while he was the BSHS team chaplain,” said organizer Tyler Brown. “It could send coaches to a leadership conference, bring a speaker into a district-wide breakfast for all the athletes and coaches, help send them to Jamaica (for a charity mission trip), etc.
