The Van Horn boys soccer team will play for the title of the Kansas City Cup.
A strong defensive effort helped the Falcons stave off a strong challenge from Alta Vista Academy in the tournament’s semifinals Friday at Van Horn High School.
“The defense played very well today. They played a great game,” Falcons coach Jesus Rodriguez said. “Once we were able to shut their big guy down, we were able to control it. They are a good team and came in undefeated, just like us.”
Favian Valenzuela took a through ball from Luis Mejia and scored in the fifth minute to put Van Horn ahead 1-0.
Mario Rojo then drilled in a shot from 28 yards out in the 20th minute for a 2-0 lead before Alta Vista cut that in half five minutes later.
The Falcons held off Alta Vista until Angel DeAvila could finish off a passing combo with a rocket from 20 yards out in the 55th minute for the final margin.
The Falcons (9-0), ranked 10th in the state in Class 3, meet Lincoln Prep, a 3-2 overtime winner over Raytown South, in the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Van Horn.
On Thursday, the Falcons routed Kansas City Northeast 10-0 in the final pool play game. Valenzuela scored a hat trick and Rojo and Mejia each added two goals. Juan Ramirez, DeAvlia and Raynalso Jean-Pierre each contributed a goal apiece.
FORT OSAGE 5, WINNETONKA 0: Fort Osage stayed unbeaten, improving to 6-0 with a win over Winnetonka in a non-conference game Thursday.
Noah Smith led the Indians with two goals and Jack Tupinio, Jake Lammering and Dylan Stillwell each had one goal.
OAK PARK 1, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 0: The Bears fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Suburban Middle Six with a loss to the Northmen Thursday.
