Blue Springs South boys soccer coach Jonathan Grice had a few reasons to be concerned about how the Jaguars would come out Thursday night against visiting Pembroke Hill.

The Jaguars were coming off what Grice called “a rough practice” Wednesday. And as he acknowledged, they had “the distraction of Senior Night.” Then, there was the memory of their 1-0 Oct. 13, 2016, road loss to the Raiders.

South responded by scoring three goals during the first 22 minutes and cruising to a 5-0 win.

“It could’ve been a really rough start,” Grice said. “Luckily, our captains and our seniors really got it together, had a really focused warmup, a focused pregame. And we got to the point where we came out and I felt like we were dialed in.”

Grice also felt that the 2016 defeat spurred South.

“I think a lot of those guys that were out there tonight were in that game last year – and so, they didn’t like the way that felt,” he said. “They felt like we were probably the better team, but couldn’t get the win last year. So this year, they wanted to take care of business. And it was absolutely incredible to be able to do that on a Senior Night – and to make that statement.”

Senior Braedon Burner helped the Jaguars make their statement by lofting a shot that dropped into the net in the seventh minute.

“Honestly, when I hit that, I didn’t know it was going to drop,” Burner said. “I thought it was going over (the crossbar). The defense played really well on that. I just got a lucky touch.”

Senior Chris Smoot slipped in a shot in the 13th minute. Junior Bryce Millican made it 3-0 South in the 22nd minute.

Sophomore Joel Sterling finished a skirmish in the 58th minute. Senior Jacob Straub finished the scoring a minute later converting on a penalty kick. It was Straub’s first goal this season.

“When I went up to take the PK, obviously, I was nervous,” Straub said. “But the keeper dove the wrong way. Lucky for me.”

The win put the Jaguars at 8-12 entering the final week of the regular season. The Raiders, who’ll begin Class 2 District 13 Tournament play next Tuesday at Center, finished the regular season 9-10-1.
