FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Kansas City Mavericks coach John-Scott Dickson did not see many positive signs from his team in Friday night’s 8-2 loss at Fort Wayne.
The Komets took a 4-0 lead into the locker room after the first period and the Mavericks could never dig their way out of that early hole.
“It was embarrassing,” Dickson said by phone after the game, which left the Mavericks with a 1-1 record. “Saturday night, we are going to be looking for some intensity and to compete.”
Garrett Thompson got the Komets’ scoring started at 11:01, and he was followed by Tyson Fawcett, Jamie Schaafsma and Ryan Culkin.
Kansas City’s Jordan Kwas scored a second-period goal, but the Komets (2-0) owned a 6-1 lead after two periods. Mike McMurtry and Mark Cooper assisted on Kwas’ goal.
Matt Robertson, who had two goals in the Mavericks’ season-opening win at Tulsa, scored a third-period goal, but it was too little too late as the two teams play again tonight in Fort Wayne.
Tyler Parsons, who was in the net in the Mavericks first win of the season, took the loss. He faced 30 shots and had just 22 saves.
