The Kansas City Mavericks’ six-game winning streak came to an end Friday night in a loss to the Kalamazoo Wings Friday on the road.
Neither team scored in the first period, but Kalamazoo’s Tyler Heinonen scored off an assist from Tyler Biggsto give his team a 1-0 lead at the 17:31 mark in the second.
Biggs added to the Wings’ lead in the third period with his fifth goal of the season off an assist from Kyle Blaney and Justin Taylor and Jimmy Mullin added a goal of his own about 4 minutes later off an assist from Danny Moynihan and Aaron Irving to make it 3-0.
Kansas City (10-7-0-0, 20 points) finally got on the board at the 6:25 mark when forward Justin Breton scored a goal off an assist from defender Alex Brooks and forward Shawn Pauly to cut the advantage to 3-1. But Kalamazoo was able to respond with a shorthanded goal from Kyle Bushee to push the lead back up to three. That shorthanded goal surrendered by the Mavericks was their ECHL-leading sixth of the season.
Mullin put the game away with a score 17 seconds later. Kansas City’s Nate Wideman scored his third goal of the season at the 12:38 mark to produce the final score.
The Mavericks will take on the Indy Fuel (4-8-2-1, 11 points) at 6:35 p.m. tonight.
