The Grain Valley boys basketball team got its season off to a nice start with a 47-39 win over Marshall Tuesday in the first round of the Marshall Tournament.

The Eagles led 14-10 after the first quarter but Marshall tied it at 18 all at halftime. The Owls took a 29-26 lead into the fourth before the Eagles won that period 21-10 for the win.

Ethan Macoubrie led the Eagles with 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals; Andru Garrett added 11 points and Tate Collum chipped in with eight.

“I was proud of our toughness down the stretch,” Grain Valley coach Andy Herbert said. “First games are always scary because you never really know what to expect. Marshall played extremely hard and made it tough on us. We responded late and did enough to get out of there. Guys we're resilient all night long.”

ROCKHURST 71, LEE'S SUMMIT NORTH 51: The Broncos faced an early challenge in its season opener against the Hawklets and fell in the non-conference matchup Tuesday at North.

Logan Jenkins led the Broncos with 12 points and Elijah Farr added 10.

Rockhurst went up 22-12 at the end of one quarter and pushed the lead up to 39-19 at halftime to build the big lead.

OAK GROVE 77, KC FRONTIER 23: Jaxon Althaus led four scorers in double figures with 19 points as Oak Grove cruised past Kansas City Frontier School of Excellence in its season and home opener Tuesday.

The Panthers jumped to a 37-14 halftime lead and then outscored Frontier 40-9 in the second half to seal the win.

Trey Bryant added 16 points, Dylon Pfeifer had 14 and Kenton Wilhoit contributed 12 to help lead Oak Grove (1-0).
