The Van Horn girls basketball team doubled its scoring out of the entire first half in the third quarter alone Wednesday.
That allowed the Falcons to rally to within one point in the final quarter, but they couldn’t complete the comeback in a 49-44 loss to St. Michael the Archangel in a consolation semifinal in Eagles Invitational at Summit Christian Academy.
Van Horn (0-2) trailed 19-10 at halftime but scored 20 points in the third quarter to make it close.
Chase Siedlik and Lexi Robinson led the way for the Falcons with 13 points apiece, while Dasiah Tatum added 10.
The Falcons play in the seventh-place game at 4 p.m. Friday at Summit Christian.
ST. JOSEPH CENTRAL 48, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 43: William Chrisman couldn’t hold on to a third-quarter lead as host St. Joseph Central rallied for a non-conference win Tuesday.
The Bears led 31-27 after outscoring the Indians 15-7 in the third quarter, but Central shot 22 of 29 from the free-throw line in the game to help the rally.
“We had a lot better effort on the defensive end of the floor,” Chrisman coach Jake Kates said after his team dropped to 0-2 overall. “The intensity was very good, but we have to learn to play with that intensity and not foul. We put them on the line 29 times and they made 22 of them.
“Offensively we still have a lot to figure out, but we will get there.”
Dawson Herl scored 12 points and Tony Hilton added 10 to lead Chrisman.
