A second-quarter swoon cost the Fort Osage boys basketball team a chance at a comeback Wednesday.
The Indians went nearly 4 1/2 minutes without a point in the second period, then rallied in the second half before falling 72-62 to host Belton.
The Indians led 20-18 with about 6 minutes left in the second quarter but then went ice cold, not scoring again until the 1:37 mark of the period.
“By that time we were down eight or nine points when we scored again,” Fort Osage coach Josh Wilson said. “We got it back within four in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get over the hump, and Belton made its free throws.”
The Pirates outscored the Indians 25-16 in the second to grab a 39-27 halftime lead.
Nick Dye sank five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead the Indians (0-3). Dez Griswold drained three treys and totaled 17 points.
BONNER SPRINGS 58, TRUMAN 39: The Truman boys basketball team squeaked based Eudora (Kan.) in a 57-55 win in the first round of the Eudora/Paola Tournament Monday before falling to Bonner Springs (Kan.) 58-39 in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Against Bonner Springs, the Patriots were down just 17-16 at the end of the first period but went into halftime trailing 31-22. The Patriots cut the lead to six at the end of three but Bonner Springs outscored them 18-5 in the fourth quarter to put it away.
Kaimen Lennox led Truman with 12 points and Sam Bilimon added 10.
Against Eudora, it was a close game throughout as Truman trailed 11-10 at the end of one period but rebounded to lead 26-23 at halftime. The Patriots extended the lead to 43-38 at the end of the third.
Keaton Wiley led the Patriots with 14 points, Bilimon added 12 and Lennox chipped in with 10.
The Patriots will play for third place at 6:30 p.m. today.
OAK GROVE 50, CAMERON 39: The Panthers used big first and fourth quarters in which they outscored Cameron by a combined 35-8 to earn a win in the semifinals of the Husker Classic Wednesday at Lafayette County High School in Higginsville.
Oak Grove led 16-2 at the end of one period before Cameron stormed back to cut the lead to 22-18 at halftime. The Dragons actually took a 33-31 lead going into the fourth before the Panthers used a 19-6 fourth quarter to take it.
Dylon Pfeifer led Oak Grove with 12 points and Jaxon Althaus added 10. The Panthers will play in the championship game of the tournament at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
TRUMAN 61, OLATHE NORTHWEST 50: The Patriots advanced to the semifinal round of the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic tournament with a victory over Olathe (Kan.) Northwest at DeSoto (Kan.) High School Monday.
Truman trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but came back to lead 27-24 at halftime. Truman used a big third period to take a 47-33 lead going into the fourth.
Deon Monroe led the Patriots with 21 points and Erin Davis added 10.
