A pair of local athletes for the University of Missouri-Kansas City were among the several named by the Western Athletic Conference Thursday at 2017 Academic All-WAC honorees from men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.

James Barnett, a senior men’s cross country runner for UMKC and a Blue Springs High School graduate, and Reighan Childers, a UMKC junior women’s soccer player and Grain Valley High School graduate, were honored by the WAC.

To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

A total of 263 student-athletes were named to the list. Of the first and second team All-WAC selections from the fall sports, 66 percent were also honored as Academic All-WAC honorees. UMKC was third in the WAC with 34 of the honorees, trailing only Utah Valley (44) and Seattle (35). Of the sports, women’s soccer had the most honorees with 91.
