The Lee’s Summit North boys tennis team rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play by winning five singles matches to take a 6-3 Suburban Big Seven victory against host Park Hill Wednesday.
No. 1 singles player Joe Hammerly won 11-9, No. 3 Matthew DeBacker won 10-6, No. 4 Nick Mathis won 10-8, No. 5 Lukas Parrish prevailed 10-3 and No. 6 Drew Houk won 10-6 for the Broncos in their season opener.
DeBacker and Logan Leslie teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 win.
“It seems like everyone else has played several matches already, so we were anxious to get our season started,” Broncos coach Stu Reece said. “At one point it looked like we might sweep the doubles to go up 3-0 … so to come back strong and take five of six singles matches for the win was a very positive sign for us. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can continued to work and improve our doubles play.”
North fell 5-4 in the junior varsity match.
