Dominance in the upper weight classes paid off for Blue Springs South Wednesday.
The visiting Jaguars took down Rockhurst, 41-31.
Though Rockhurst won every match from 112 to 130 pounds, the Jaguars won all but two matches from 135-285, most of them by pin or forfeit.
Ian Storey (140), E.J. Merlo (171) and Adam Halliday (189) all had pins, while Quinton Perrin (152) recorded a technical fall. Tyler Wheeler (135) and John Nix (215) won by decision. Kyle Montalto (103) and Josh Sanderson (285) both received forfeits.
“We made some silly mistakes that cost us some matches,” Blue Springs South coach Doug Black said of his lower weights. “We just have to eliminate a couple of mental mistakes and work on some things for this weekend.”
South dominated the junior varsity match, 50-18.
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 51, GRAIN VALLEY 24: A short-handed Grain Valley team did not have enough to compete with last year’s state runner-up Wednesday.
The visiting Eagles won only three matches and received two forfeits in a Missouri River Valley Conference West match against Excelsior Springs, which tied for second in the state tournament last year.
Grain Valley was without state qualifiers from last year Jake Martin and Dalton Miller, as well as starter Tucker Pauley, because of injuries.
“Miller may be done for the year,” Eagles coach Jarrod Steffens said. “Pauley should be back. But I thought we did well. We had some freshmen step in and a couple got varsity wins. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Nathan England (130) scored a pin for the Eagles, while Kevin Hungerford (135) and Ben Call (160) each won decisions. Wes Freeman (171) and Davy Corr (285) both won by forfeit.
