The Blue Springs girls swimming and diving teams’ reign at state appears to be in jeopardy.
The Wildcats sent two individuals to the finals in two events each and got two relays into the finals, but that may not be enough to win their third straight state title and their fifth in six years.
Senior Shelby Bolin and sophomore Ibby Simcox led the way for the Wildcats in Friday’s preliminaries, with each earning berths in a pair of finals.
Bolin turned in the fifth-best time in the 200-yard freestyle with a clocking of 1 minute, 55.66 seconds. She also made the finals of the 500 freestyle with a seventh-place time of 5:10.49.
Simcox turned in the best seed for the Wildcats, taking the third-best time in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.05. She also qualified for the 100 butterfly final with a time of 58.13 seconds.
Simcox also swam legs on the 200 medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team that made it to the finals. Simcox teamed with Abby Stanley, Maria Juarez and Megan Wright to finish with the seventh-best time in the medley relay (1:52.40). Simcox, Bolin, Anna Juarez and Kristen Parsons were fourth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:41.21.
Lee’s Summit North’s Lisa Menne and Raytown’s Monica Hernandez were the only other area swimmers to earn finals berths. Menne earned spots in the 100 and 200 freestyle finals, while Hernandez will go for a title in the 50 freestyle.
The Wildcats’ Stanley made the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke with the 11th best time (1:00.83).
Truman junior Kara Schoneboom didn’t make it to the second day, taking 33rd in the 200 freestyle and 32nd in the 100 butterfly.
