Independence, MO —

A freshman rescued Fort Osage.
The Indians trailed the visiting Belton Pirates 35-31 going into the final match.
Then freshman 215-pounder Rick Orucutt pinned Josh Bruce in 1 minute, 8 seconds, giving the Indians a key 37-35 Suburban Middle Six victory.
“The freshman was the hero,” Fort Osage coach Bob Luke said. “Zach Bailey at 125 reinjured his shoulder in practice and we couldn’t use him. He is a two-time state qualifier. Pulling him out makes for one heck of a hole. I thought the forfeit at 119 could be the heartbreaker.
“It was a very exciting match, back and forth the whole night. The kids did what they had to do to get the win. I was very excited how we wrestled. It was something to build on for the rest of the year.”
Corey Braughton (285), Kodey Divers (130), Dominique Ramirez (160) and Isaac Ankron (171) also won by a pin for the Indians.
Austin Brothers (103) and Shane Harrelson (135) were other winners as Fort Osage improved to 2-0 in the conference.
Fort Osage was a 45-21 junior varsity winner.
OAK PARK 39, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 38: The upset was so close Chrisman could taste it Tuesday.
But a pin in the final match forced the Bears to fall to the perennial state power Northmen in a Suburban Middle Six road dual.
“I’m disappointed,” Chrisman coach Mick Cronk said. “If we wrestle our best across the lineup – even the guys who won – we could have either won or at least tied. We should have won this dual.”
Alex Keith (103), Justin Danforth (112) and Nate Tuione (285) each grabbed pins for the Bears, while Arthur Meyer (135) and Ray Williams both won major decisions.
Chrisman also took advantage of open weight classes at 152 and 160 pounds.
Chrisman won the junior varsity match, 45-21.
OAK GROVE 44, HARRISONVILLE 32: Despite missing a pair of key wrestlers, Oak Grove opened Missouri River Valley Conference West competition with a win Tuesday.
Brandon Morgason (112), Caleb Titus (130), Kodie Morgason (135) and Charlie Stoll (215) won by fall for the Panthers. Darrick Smith (160) won by injury default, while Dylan Meisenheimer scored a technical fall.
Chase Wrisinger (145) won the closest match of the night, 5-4.
“Harrisonville’s very solid, especially as a dual team,” Oak Grove coach Bob Glasgow said. “They gave us all we wanted. Coming off the Christmas break, this was a good win to get.”
Oak Grove won a tight JV match, 22-21.
