The Van Horn losing streak is over.
One touchdown was enough for Van Horn to defeat Kansas City (Kan.) Wyandotte 6-0 at Truman Friday night.
The loss snapped a 21-game Van Horn losing streak. Wyandotte was opening the season.
The win was the first for the Falcons since becoming a member of the Independence School District.
GRAIN VALLEY 48, JEFFERSON CITY BLAIR OAKS 8: Jeremy Maynard was on target.
He completed 10 of 17 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns in leading Grain Valley to a 48-8 victory over Jefferson City Blair Oaks Friday night.
“Our defense played exceptionally well,” Grain Valley coach Forrest Rovello said. “Blair Oaks is a good football team. We couldn’t establish the run, but we could pass the ball.
“The special teams broke down several times, but all in all it was a good performance. There are still a lot of things we need to improve upon before we get into conference play.”
The Eagles, in bouncing back from a 14-13 opening season loss to Platte County, led 21-0 after one quarter.
Riley Williams ran 3 yards and Ryan Nace 15 yards and Maynard passed 61 yards to Zach Hoover for the first-quarter touchdowns. Shay Parra kicked one extra point and Williams ran for a two-point conversion.
In the second quarter, Maynard passed 50 yards to Williams and 93 yards to Hoover and ran 10 yards for a TD as the Eagles boosted their lead to 42-0 at halftime. Parra kicked three extra points.
Zac Stockman scored on a 1-yard run and ran for the two-point conversion for the eight Blair Oaks points in the third quarter.
Dylan Farrell scored the final Grain Valley touchdown later in the quarter.
Hoover caught three passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns.
OAK GROVE 31, HOLDEN 28: Pressure didn’t faze Zach Leaman Friday night.
Leaman booted a 40-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining to help Oak Grove edge Holden 31-28 in a non-conference game at Oak Grove. Leaman also was 4-for-4 with extra points.
“I was very confident that he could make it,” Oak Grove coach Pete Carpino said. “He makes them from that distance consistently in practice. If there was pressure involved, it didn’t bother him.”
Carpino said an interception by Taylor Brinegar with 2:11 left was critical in helping the Panthers register a come-from-behind win.
“It was a total team effort in the truest sense of the word,” Carpino said. “We came up with some big plays when we needed them. There were times when our guys could have let the game get away from us.”
