Area high school tennis players fared well in the recent Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Summer Classic Open Tennis Tournament.
A pair of Grain Valley players captured titles in the girls 18-and-under and 16-and-under classes in the tournament held July 9-11. Katelyn Barr claimed the 18U title, beating Lee’s Summit West’s Kylie McCollum in the finals. Lanae Wilke of Grain Valley claimed the 16U girls championship.
Zach Felz of Truman High School captured first in the boys 14U division. His Patriot teammates, David Franklin and Chase Ruddell, were the boys doubles champions.
Lee’s Summit junior Matt Reynolds claimed the 16U boys crown, topping Lee’s Summit West’s Matt Halas in the title match.
In the men’s divisions, Jim Stoner pulled off a double. He claimed the men’s open singles crown, topping Gary Titus in the final. Stoner also teamed with Michael Clemmons to take the men’s open doubles title.
Gary Titus teamed with Megan Titus for the mixed doubles title.
Other division winners were Kris Chatrathi (men’s 35 singles), Jay Sanders (men’s A singles), Grant Klene (boys 12U) and Jenny Moon (girls 14U).
ITA TOURNAMENT DEADLINE APPROACHING: The Independence Tennis Association is taking registrations for its End of Summer Tennis Tournament through Aug. 2.
The tournament will be played Aug. 6-8 at the courts in Santa Fe Trail Park.
The tournament offers several divisions. Juniors boys and girls singles and doubles will offer age divisions of 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-and-under.
Adult divisions, for ages 19 and older, will offer men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles.
Senior divisions, for ages 55 and older, will offer men’s and women’s singles and doubles.
Cost is $12 per singles event and $22 per doubles team. Players are limited to two events. A minimum of three entries will be necessary for each event category to be played. Players are guaranteed two matches and trophies will be awarded for first and second place.
The draw will take place on Aug. 4 and players will be notified of their playing times.
