Lucas Williams was in top pitching form.
He pitched a two-hitter, struck out nine and walked none in leading host Grain Valley to a 3-1 Missouri River Conference West victory over Odessa on Tuesday.
The win clinched at least a tie for the conference title for the Eagles (13-6, 8-0).
A two-run fifth inning helped by Tim Collins’ RBI single broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Eagles the victory.
“It was a well-pitched game by Lucas,” Grain Valley coach Mark Lyford said. “We had solid defense and a couple of key hits in the fifth that opened up a close game.”
Austin New singled twice for half of the Grain Valley hits off losing pitcher Colton Hilbrenner.
A victory over Excelsior Springs on Thursday would give the Eagles an undisputed title.
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 10, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 0: Host Lee’s Summit North scored seven runs in the first inning to down the Bears.
Dallas Woods pitched a five-inning two-hitter and struck out five for North (10-11). Chrisman fell to 0-19.
Devon Willmon, Josh DeBacker and Brett Conrow led the North attack with two hits each.
OAK GROVE 3, HARRISONVILLE 2: Host Oak Grove rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a dramatic Missouri River Valley Conference West victory.
The game was scoreless when it was suspended by rain in the top of the second inning on April 12.
With two outs and no one on base in the Oak Grove seventh, Zach Morgan walked, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Cole Doherty’s single.
Doherty took second base on the throw home and went to third as no one covered the bag. Brett Kellogg then singled in the winning run.
“Our kids battle, they don’t quit,” Oak Grove coach Kirk Sears said. “This wasn’t the prettiest game for us as we hit two batters and both scored with the aid of a couple of errors.”
Conner Matson relieved Doherty in the seventh inning for the victory. Matson spaced five hits, struck out five, walked none and allowed no earned runs.
Seann Baker led an eight-hit Oak Grove attack with two singles and one RBI. Dakota Martin doubled. A fifth consecutive victory improved Oak Grove to 11-5 and 5-2.
