Chelsea Gabriel led the way and the remainder of the Grain Valley girls track and field team followed.
Gabriel triumphed in the 100 meter high hurdles in 16.73 seconds and the 300 lows in 49.21 as the Eagles claimed their first Missouri River Valley Conference West title with 121 points Saturday. Oak Grove was sixth with 48.
Grain Valley was third in the boys meet with 101 points. Oak Grove was the champion with 161.
Other first-place efforts were by Mariah Hernandez in the high jump – with an area season’s best of 5 feet, 6 inches – Caitlin Harris in the triple jump, 33-10, and the 1,600 relay team of Hernandez, Courtney Johnson, Rachel Reddell and Gabriel. The relay squad set a school record of 4:23.36.
The 400, 800 and 3,200 relay teams each finished second with times of 52.77, 1:52.61 and 10:31.60, respectively. Freshman Haley McDonnell was second in the triple jump at 31-6.5.
Reddell (high jump), Megan Cunningham (long jump), Sadie King (shot put) and Courtney Johnson (800) added third-place finishes.
“I was very proud of the girls and how they performed,” Grain Valley coach Cris Byington said. “They came out and competed very well against their opposition. The meet was close to the finish and they kept fighting for points and didn’t give up. “Their hard work and effort paid off.”
On the boys’ side, Grain Valley’s Daniel Mahurin was first in the 200 (23.21) and second in the 400 (50.46); Zac Hoover second in the 200 (23.27); and Ben Baumer second in the 800 (2:04.71) and 1,600 (4:51.2).
The Eagles added a first-place time in the 800 relay (44.55) while Eric Jenkins and Mitch Gaylord took second and third, respectively, in the shot put.
“We mixed the entries a little to try and spread out a few points and also due to injuries with an opportunity to catch up to Oak Grove’s greater depth,” Grain Valley coach Marc Cleveland said.
“Mahurin did have a very good day, medaling in the 200 and 400 and anchoring the 400 relay. Baumer also had a nice double silver medal finish in the 800 and 1,600.”
