A year ago, it was considered a success when Blue Springs and Blue Springs South hosted the Missouri boys soccer state championships. But this year, conditions are ripe for the event to run even smoother.

Last November, around 6,000 people flooded to Blue Springs to watch the Class 1, 2 and 3 semifinals and championships despite frigid temperatures with 30-plus mile per hour winds.

This weekend, temperatures are expected to be in the 50s with mostly sunny weather and Blue Springs School District activities coordinator Mark Bubalo said they’re hoping to draw 8,000 people.

But regardless of how many people show, he said things should run even more efficiently than a year ago.

“I felt like both tournaments (boys and girls) went really well last year, but preparation was pretty hectic, and it’s been a little easier this time around,” Bubalo said.

Bubalo said it’s been much easier figuring out how many people are needed to staff concession stands and take tickets as well as which games need more workers on hand.

Tickets for each session are $7. That gets a wristband that will allow fans to watch any game at Blue Springs or Blue Springs South that day.

The action starts with the Class 2 semifinals as Smithville meets St. Dominic at 11 a.m. at Peve Stadium at Blue Springs High School. Lutheran South faces Carthage at 1 p.m.

In Class 1, Southern Boone will take on St. Joseph Bishop LeBlond at noon Friday at Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium at Blue Springs South while Bayless plays Springfield Catholic at 2 p.m.

Rockhurst and Christian Brothers College High School clash in the Class 3 semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday at Blue Springs South. Chaminade, which is ranked fifth in the nation, goes up against Columbia Rock Bridge at 6 p.m.

The Class 2 championship will be played at noon Saturday followed by the Class 1 title match at 2 p.m. and the Class 3 game at 4 p.m. All championships will be played at Blue Springs South.
