Grain Valley girls basketball coach Randy Draper called it a quality victory.
Two strong quarters – an 18-point second and 19-point fourth – led the Eagles past Liberty North 47-36 in the third-place game of the Grain Valley Sonic Showdown on Friday.
“It’s a district opponent and a quality win for us,” Draper said. “We had to press and run for 32 minutes. It’s a big win and something to be proud of.”
Rachel Reddell and Sarah Turner shared Grain Valley scoring honors with 14 points each.
The Eagles (12-5) outscored North 19-11 over the final eight minutes to secure the victory.
Lincoln Prep edged Pleasant Hill 45-41 in the championship.
OZARK 51, BLUE SPRINGS 40: It was a tough two days for Blue Springs.
The Wildcats were stunned by Lee’s Summit North on Thursday and then fell at Ozark Friday night.
“But I feel a lot better tonight than I did last night,” Blue Springs coach Mark Spigarelli said. “We attacked the basket. The kids played a lot harder against a very good team. We ran out of gas.”
Ozark outscored the Class 5 No. 3 Wildcats (16-4) 13-7 in the third quarter for a safe 42-32 lead.
Lizzy Wendell’s 15 points paced the Wildcats. Karyla Middlebrook and Tyra Bickham each added nine.
Ozark was called for only seven fouls. Blue Springs, in a basketball oddity, didn’t shoot a free throw.
