Josh Felz and Katie Willits enjoyed an early-morning signing ceremony as the two Truman High School seniors will continue their athletic pursuits at the collegiate level.
Felz will run cross country and play baseball at Missouri Valley, and Willits will play volleyball at Central Methodist University.
“This is a very nice and special morning for these two students,” Truman activities director Eric Holm said before the 7 a.m. ceremony. “It’s always special when you have students who continue to play their respective sports in college.”
Willits said she selected Central Methodist from eight schools that offered her a scholarship.
“I visited Central Methodist and knew that’s where I wanted to go,” the Truman middle hitter said. “At first, I didn’t think I wanted to play college volleyball, but the offers began coming in and I thought I would see what the schools could offer me.
“Once I got to Central Methodist, I knew I didn’t have to visit any other school.”
Truman volleyball coach Denise Craig said Willits will be a good fit at Central Methodist.
“I’m excited for Katie,” Craig said. “I think she’ll fit right in at Central Methodist and really help their program.”
Felz said he hopes to play baseball and run cross county at Missouri Valley, even though both sports take place in the fall.
“Cross country is in the fall, and they have fall baseball – along with spring baseball,” said Felz, the Truman shortstop. “I think we’ll make it work, because I’m really excited about both programs.”
Truman baseball coach John Eglich believes that Felz’s best baseball is yet to come.
“We had a great four years at Truman,” Eglich said, “but as Josh gets bigger and stronger he’s going to become a better player. I think he will become a very good college baseball player.”
