Oak Grove High School has a new football coach.

“We are excited to announce Pat Richard as our new football coach,” Oak Grove activities dirctor Jerry Girdner said. “Coach Richard, a graduate from Shawnee Mission West High School and Baker University, started his career in education at Baker University as a teacher and coach.”

Richard took over a struggling Orrick High School football team 11 years ago and led the squad to two state championships. At Orrick his overall record was 98-27; in addition, the team made seven playoff appearances and won six I-70 Conference championships.

“Coach Richard has proven success and experience that our administration believes will take our program to the next level,” Girdner added.

Richard is excited about his latest challenge.

“I am honored to become part of the Oak Grove School District and its incredible tradition of excellence, both academically and athletically,” Richard said. “This is a great opportunity to help build a football program that the students, administration and community can be proud of.

“I was a college teammate of several former Panthers at Baker University, and the work ethic, love of the game, and strong values that they exhibited speak volumes about the ‘Panther Way.’

“My father’s family dairy farm is about 10 minutes away from the school, so I’m going back to where I spent my summers as a kid.  My family is very eager to join the Oak Grove community. The town’s history of support for its young people and schools has my wife and I very excited to raise our daughter as an Oak Grove Panther.”

Richard and his wife Toniann, have a daughter, Grace.

He replaces Pete Carpino, who was the Panthers head coach the past three seasons.
